Job Description
Role Synopsis
The Mechanical Engineer will be a key member of the Projects India organisation, supporting mechanical engineering and contractor oversight for Production & Operations (P&O) Projects. The role focuses on the design, specification, procurement, fabrication, and commissioning of pressure systems and mechanical equipment. It involves active collaboration with engineering contractors and cross-functional teams to ensure safe, cost-effective, and high-quality project execution.
What You Will Deliver
- Support mechanical engineering in delivering safe, cost-effective, and competitive project designs
- Provide technical oversight of engineering contractor deliverables for mechanical systems
- Contribute to mechanical equipment specification, requisitions, datasheets, and bid evaluations
- Support technical bid analysis and clarify deviation requests from contractors and suppliers
- Monitor supplier performance and oversee delivery of mechanical equipment packages
- Review vendor documentation, drawings, inspection and test plans (ITPs)
- Participate in and review FAT (Factory Acceptance Test) and SAT (Site Acceptance Test) plans
- Assist in resolving complex technical issues and challenges in mechanical engineering
- Ensure compliance with bp's engineering practices and relevant industry standards
- Record and share learnings to support continuous improvement
- Collaborate across disciplines and with construction, commissioning, and operations teams
What You Will Need to Be Successful
Must Have Educational Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent
Preferred Certifications
- Chartered Engineer or Registered Professional Engineer
Experience Requirements
- Minimum of 5 years in oil & gas, petrochemical, refining, or chemical industries
- Minimum 2 years of experience in mechanical engineering for capital projects
Essential Skills & Experience
- Solid understanding of mechanical engineering fundamentals and pressure systems failure modes
- Experience in the design, specification, procurement, and commissioning of mechanical systems
- Working knowledge of piping systems, pressure vessels, heat exchangers, valves, and mechanical packages
- Familiarity with industry standards and codes (ASME, BSI, ISO, IOGP)
- Effective decision-making, with a pragmatic and challenge-driven approach
- Strong communication skills for interfacing with internal teams, contractors, and suppliers
- Demonstrated track record of technical delivery on major projects
Good to Have / Can Be Developed On-the-Job
- Site construction and commissioning exposure
- Experience with mechanical equipment operation and maintenance
- Knowledge of piping and valve design, handling equipment, and layout development
- Experience working with geographically distributed teams
