Job Description
Key Responsibilities:
1. Clinical Care
- Diagnose and manage a broad spectrum of pulmonary diseases including:
- Asthma, COPD, tuberculosis (including MDR/XDR-TB), ILD, pleural diseases
- Sleep-disordered breathing, bronchiectasis, lung cancer, occupational lung diseases
- Attend to daily rounds, new admissions, follow-up care, and discharge planning.
- Manage patients in respiratory wards, HDU, and ICU settings.
2. Procedures & Diagnostics
- Perform and interpret:
- Pulmonary function tests (PFTs), 6-minute walk test
- Diagnostic and therapeutic bronchoscopy
- Thoracentesis, pleural biopsy, intercostal drain insertion
- Sleep studies (polysomnography) and CPAP/BiPAP titration
- Ultrasound-guided pleural procedures
- Assist in or independently perform advanced procedures like EBUS, medical thoracoscopy (if trained).
3. Emergency & ICU Support
- Manage acute respiratory emergencies such as:
- Severe asthma, COPD exacerbations
- Pneumothorax, massive hemoptysis, acute hypoxic/hypercapnic respiratory failure
- Initiate and manage oxygen therapy, NIV, or mechanical ventilation.
4. Teaching & Academic Duties (If Applicable)
- Conduct bedside teaching for medical students and junior residents.
- Participate in academic rounds, CMEs, case presentations, journal clubs, and research projects.
- Guide postgraduate students (in DNB/MD programs, if part of a teaching hospital).
5. Documentation & Compliance
- Maintain detailed and accurate patient records, procedural notes, discharge summaries.
- Ensure compliance with TB notification protocols and RNTCP guidelines (where applicable).
- Follow hospital infection control protocols and medical ethics.
Qualifications & Experience:
- For Senior Resident:
- MD / DNB in Pulmonary Medicine / Respiratory Medicine / Chest & TB from a recognized institution
- Valid registration with NMC / State Medical Council
- 0–3 years post-PG experience in pulmonary/critical care
- For Attending Consultant:
- MD / DNB with 3–5+ years of clinical experience in Pulmonary Medicine
- Experience in procedures like bronchoscopy, thoracoscopy, NIV management
- Exposure to critical care settings preferred
Skills & Competencies:
- Strong clinical decision-making and diagnostic skills
- Proficiency in interpreting radiology, CT thorax, PFTs, ABGs, and sleep studies
- Skilled in respiratory interventions and use of equipment (bronchoscopes, PFT machines, CPAP/NIV)
- Teamwork and communication skills with patients and colleagues
- Awareness of national programs like RNTCP/NTEP and MDR-TB protocols
