Job Description
Key Responsibilities:
1. Pre-operative Assessment
- Evaluate surgical patients during pre-anesthesia check-ups (PAC).
- Assess ASA grading, anesthesia risk, and optimize co-morbidities.
- Obtain informed consent for anesthesia procedures.
2. Intra-operative Anesthesia Management
- Administer general, regional, or monitored anesthesia as appropriate.
- Monitor and manage airway, vital signs, fluids, and anesthesia depth.
- Ensure safe positioning of patients and prevent intra-operative complications.
- Supervise induction, maintenance, and recovery of anesthesia.
3. Post-operative & Recovery Care
- Monitor and manage patients in the Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU).
- Handle post-operative pain, nausea, airway concerns, or hemodynamic instability.
- Prescribe and oversee post-op analgesia plans (PCA, epidural, etc.).
4. Critical Care & Emergency Support
- Provide anesthesia and airway management during trauma resuscitation, cardiac arrests, or emergencies.
- Support ICU team in ventilator and sedation management (especially for Attending Consultants).
5. Procedures & Skills
- Perform:
- Endotracheal intubation, spinal/epidural anesthesia, central/arterial line placement
- Ultrasound-guided regional blocks (if trained)
- Sedation and monitoring for non-OR procedures (MRI, endoscopy, etc.)
6. Academic & Training Responsibilities (if applicable)
- Participate in teaching medical students, residents, and nursing staff.
- Attend departmental academic sessions, case reviews, and journal clubs.
- Contribute to clinical audits, research, or publications.
7. Compliance & Safety
- Adhere to anesthesia protocols, surgical safety checklists, and infection control guidelines.
- Ensure documentation of anesthesia records, drug usage, and adverse events.
Qualifications & Experience:
- Required Qualification:
- MD / DNB in Anesthesiology from a recognized institution
- Registration:
- Valid NMC / State Medical Council registration
- Experience:
- Senior Resident: 0–3 years post-PG experience
- Attending Consultant: 3–5+ years of independent experience in OR, ICU, or critical care settings
Skills & Competencies:
- Excellent knowledge of general and regional anesthesia techniques
- Competence in airway management and emergency resuscitation
- Familiarity with anesthesia machines, monitors, and life-support equipment
- Teamwork and collaboration with surgeons, OT staff, and ICU teams
- Good communication with patients and families regarding anesthesia plans and risks
