Job Description

Key Responsibilities:

1. Clinical Duties

  • Manage OPD and inpatient cases of respiratory conditions such as:
  • Bronchial asthma, COPD, pulmonary tuberculosis, ILD, pneumonia, pleural effusions
  • Pulmonary embolism, occupational lung diseases, and lung malignancies
  • Participate in ward rounds, write case notes, and prepare discharge summaries.
  • Handle respiratory emergencies including acute exacerbations, hemoptysis, pneumothorax, and respiratory failure.

2. Procedures (Under Supervision or Independently)

  • Perform and interpret:
  • Spirometry and pulmonary function tests (PFTs)
  • Bronchoscopy, pleural aspiration, ICD insertion
  • Sleep studies (Polysomnography), allergy testing (if applicable)
  • FNAC/biopsies of lung or mediastinal masses (if trained)

3. Emergency & ICU Support

  • Attend to patients in the ER with respiratory distress or acute chest diseases.
  • Assist in managing ventilated patients and those on non-invasive ventilation (NIV).
  • Work in coordination with ICU and critical care teams for respiratory support.

4. Teaching & Academic Involvement (For Teaching Hospitals)

  • Participate in academic sessions, journal clubs, seminars, and case presentations.
  • Assist in teaching undergraduate students, interns, and junior residents.
  • Contribute to departmental research, audits, and paper presentations.

5. Documentation & Compliance

  • Maintain patient records, consent forms, and investigation results.
  • Ensure proper documentation for TB notifications, DOTS, and RNTCP (if applicable).
  • Follow infection control protocols, especially for TB and airborne diseases.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Essential Qualification: MD / DNB in Respiratory Medicine / Pulmonary Medicine / Tuberculosis & Chest Diseases from a recognized institution.
  • Registration: Valid registration with NMC or State Medical Council.
  • Experience: 0–3 years post-PG experience (as per NMC norms for Senior Residency).

Skills & Competencies:

  • Good clinical acumen in respiratory and pulmonary diseases
  • Proficiency in interpretation of chest X-rays, HRCT thorax, PFTs, and ABG analysis
  • Basic procedural skills in bronchoscopy and thoracentesis
  • Effective communication and patient counseling abilities
  • Ability to handle respiratory emergencies under supervision
