Job Description

Key Responsibilities:

1. Pre-Anesthesia Assessment

  • Evaluate cardiac surgical patients pre-operatively for anesthesia fitness.
  • Discuss anesthetic risks and obtain informed consent.
  • Optimize comorbidities including cardiac function, coagulation, and ventilation status.

2. Intraoperative Anesthesia Management

  • Administer and monitor anesthesia for:
  • Coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG)
  • Valve replacements/repairs
  • Congenital heart defect surgeries
  • Aortic and major vascular procedures
  • Thoracic surgeries (VATS, thoracotomies)
  • Manage patients on cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB), off-pump, and ECMO (if trained).
  • Perform invasive line placements (arterial lines, CVP, PA catheter), TEE (if trained), and manage hemodynamic monitoring.
  • Ensure strict asepsis and adherence to cardiac anesthesia protocols.

3. Postoperative & ICU Management

  • Provide immediate post-operative care in the Cardiothoracic ICU.
  • Manage pain relief, ventilation, hemodynamic support, and complications.
  • Collaborate with cardiac surgeons and intensivists for continuity of care.

4. Emergency Services

  • Respond to intra-hospital cardiac emergencies and code blue situations.
  • Provide anesthesia for emergency cardiac and thoracic surgeries as required.

5. Academic & Research (for teaching hospitals)

  • Participate in teaching and mentoring residents, fellows, and students.
  • Attend and contribute to academic activities such as CMEs, case discussions, journal clubs.
  • Engage in research, data collection, and publications.
