Job Description

A radiographer job involves using medical imaging equipment like X-rays, CT scanners, and MRI machines to create diagnostic images for physicians. Key responsibilities include performing diagnostic imaging, ensuring patient safety and comfort, maintaining high-quality images, and keeping accurate patient records. They work collaboratively with doctors to help diagnose and treat a wide range of medical conditions, sometimes working around the clock in emergency situations or assisting in operating rooms. 

Key responsibilities

  • Perform diagnostic imaging: Operate equipment to perform diagnostic tests like X-rays, CT scans, MRIs, and ultrasounds to help diagnose illnesses and injuries.
  • Ensure patient safety: Implement radiation protection measures for both patients and staff, ensuring all procedures are performed safely and in line with protocols.
  • Collaborate with medical staff: Work closely with radiologists, doctors, and other healthcare professionals to provide accurate information for diagnosis and treatment plans.
  • Maintain patient records: Keep accurate and detailed records of all imaging procedures and patient information.
  • Position patients: Accurately position patients to ensure the correct view for the imaging procedure.
  • Educate patients: Explain the procedure to patients to ensure they are comfortable and informed about what to expect.
  • Operate and maintain equipment: Ensure imaging equipment is functioning correctly and perform routine maintenance and calibration as needed.
  • Handle radioactive materials: Manage and use radioactive substances and nuclear medicine examinations if they work in that specialization. 

Work environment

  • Hospitals: A common workplace for radiographers, with duties potentially involving emergency care and operating room assistance.
  • Clinics and diagnostic centers: Many radiographers work in outpatient settings like private clinics and diagnostic imaging centers.
  • Support and on-call roles: Radiographers often work in 24-hour services and may need to be on call or work shifts outside of standard business hours.
