Principal Reliability Engineer
Job Description
As a Principal Reliability Engineer at Medtronic, you will be a recognized expert, leading efforts to ensure the highest levels of product reliability in our life-changing medical technologies. You will develop and conduct technical reliability studies, recommend design and test methods, and analyze performance data to enhance product and process integrity. Your expertise will be critical in driving innovation and influencing decisions that directly impact the quality and safety of our devices.
A Day in the Life
You will drive reliability excellence and innovation by:
- Developing, coordinating, and conducting technical reliability studies and evaluations of engineering design concepts and Design of Experiments (DOE) constructs.
- Recommending design or test methods and statistical process control procedures for achieving required levels of product reliability.
- Completing risk analysis studies of new designs and processes.
- Compiling and analyzing performance reports and process control statistics; investigating and analyzing relevant variables potentially affecting products and processes.
- Ensuring that corrective measures meet acceptable reliability standards.
- Analyzing preliminary plans and developing reliability engineering programs to achieve company, customer, and governmental agency reliability objectives.
- May develop mathematical models to identify units, batches, or processes posing excessive failure risks.
- As necessary, proposing changes in design or formulation to improve system and/or process reliability.
- May determine units and/or batches requiring environmental testing, and specifying the minimum number of samples to obtain statistically valid data.
- Coaching, reviewing, and delegating work to lower-level specialists.
- Representing the organization as a primary contact for specific projects and initiatives, communicating with internal and external customers and vendors at various levels.
- May negotiate with others to reach understanding or agreement and influence decision-making.
- Providing guidance, coaching, and training to other employees within your specialty area.
- Managing major/moderately complex projects, involving delegation of work and review of work products, at times acting as a team leader.
Required Knowledge and Experience
- Baccalaureate degree (or for degrees earned outside of the United States, a degree which satisfies the requirements of 8 C.F.R. 214.2(h)(4)(iii)(A)) with a minimum of 7 years of relevant experience, or an advanced degree with a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience.
- Mastery of a specialty area within reliability engineering.
- Full knowledge of industry practices.
- May have broad knowledge of project management.
- Exceptional problem-solving abilities, capable of addressing difficult, moderately complex, and undefined issues.
- Proven ability to develop solutions to moderately complex problems and make significant improvements to processes, systems, or products independently.
- Strong communication and influence skills to engage with various stakeholders.
