Job Description

Key Responsibilities:

1. Clinical Management – PICU

  • Provide round-the-clock care for critically ill children with:
  • Respiratory failure, sepsis, shock, trauma, poisoning
  • Neurological emergencies, cardiac issues, post-operative care
  • Manage mechanical ventilation (invasive & non-invasive), hemodynamic support, and renal replacement therapy.
  • Perform critical care procedures:
  • Intubation, central and arterial line placement, chest tube insertion, lumbar puncture
  • Peritoneal/HD/CRRT initiation, if applicable

2. Emergency Response

  • Lead pediatric code blue/emergency responses throughout the hospital.
  • Triage and stabilize critically ill patients in the ER or during transfers from other departments or hospitals.

3. Family Communication & Counseling

  • Communicate effectively and empathetically with patient families regarding diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment plans.
  • Guide families through critical decision-making, including resuscitation status and long-term care needs.

4. Multidisciplinary Coordination

  • Collaborate with pediatricians, surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses, physiotherapists, and nutritionists for holistic care.
  • Coordinate with pediatric sub-specialties (e.g., cardiology, neurology, nephrology) for complex cases.

5. Teaching & Research (If Academic/Teaching Institution)

  • Mentor and train pediatric residents, interns, and PICU nursing staff.
  • Participate in academic activities – case discussions, journal clubs, CMEs, and conferences.
  • Conduct or assist in clinical research and data audits related to pediatric critical care.

6. Compliance & Documentation

  • Maintain complete and accurate medical records, including clinical notes, consent forms, and procedural documentation.
  • Ensure adherence to infection control protocols, quality indicators, and hospital guidelines (e.g., NABH, JCI).

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Essential Qualification:
  • MD/DNB in Pediatrics from a recognized institution
  • Fellowship in Pediatric Critical Care (IAP/ISCCM/DM/FPCCM) preferred
  • Experience:
  • 1–3 years (for junior intensivists) or 3–5+ years for senior/independent roles
  • Experience in Level II/III PICU settings managing ventilated and critically ill children
  • Certifications: BLS, PALS, and preferably NALS or FCCS-P
