Job Description

Key Responsibilities:

1. Clinical Supervision & Patient Care

  • Supervise pre-operative, intra-operative, and post-operative nursing care.
  • Ensure patient safety and dignity are maintained throughout surgical procedures.
  • Monitor aseptic techniques and adherence to infection control protocols.
  • Conduct daily OT rounds to assess cleanliness, equipment readiness, and staff performance.

2. Staff Management

  • Lead and mentor OT nurses and support staff.
  • Allocate staff duties and prepare duty rosters, ensuring adequate coverage at all times.
  • Conduct regular staff evaluations and provide feedback for development.
  • Identify training needs and coordinate in-service education programs.

3. OT Operations & Coordination

  • Ensure timely preparation of operation theatres for scheduled and emergency procedures.
  • Coordinate with surgeons, anesthetists, OT technicians, and housekeeping for smooth OT functioning.
  • Oversee proper handover and documentation during shift changes.
  • Assist in handling critical situations and emergencies within the OT.

4. Infection Control & Safety

  • Ensure strict adherence to infection prevention and control (IPC) guidelines.
  • Monitor sterilization practices, PPE usage, and environmental hygiene.
  • Conduct regular audits and participate in root-cause analysis of infection outbreaks, if any.

5. Administrative Duties

  • Maintain accurate documentation of procedures, staff attendance, incidents, and stock usage.
  • Ensure proper handling, maintenance, and inventory of surgical instruments and supplies.
  • Participate in hospital quality assurance, NABH/JCI accreditation processes, and audits.
  • Report equipment malfunctions and ensure prompt repairs/replacements.

Qualifications & Experience:

Essential:

  • B.Sc. Nursing or GNM with valid nursing registration.
  • Minimum 8–10 years of clinical experience, including 3–5 years in OT and 1–2 years in a supervisory/matron role.

Preferred:

  • Postgraduate Diploma or Certificate in OT Management or Hospital Administration.
  • Experience in NABH-accredited or tertiary care hospitals.

Skills & Competencies:

  • Strong leadership and team management abilities.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Deep understanding of surgical nursing and OT protocols.
  • Ability to work under pressure and manage emergency situations.
  • Good knowledge of nursing documentation, computer literacy preferred.
