MEDICAL GASTROENTEROLOGIST

responsibilities

Patient care:

• Consult with patients in outpatient clinics and on hospital rounds.
• Conduct physical exams and review patient history to diagnose issues.
• Provide patient counseling on lifestyle, diet, and treatment options.

Procedures and diagnostics:

• Perform endoscopic procedures such as endoscopies, colonoscopies, and biopsies.
• Interpret diagnostic tests and biopsy results.
• Perform surgical procedures (for surgical gastroenterologists) or assist in surgeries.

Treatment and management:

• Develop and manage treatment plans for a wide range of conditions, including inflammatory bowel disease, liver diseases, and cancers.
• Prescribe medications and provide dietary advice.

Administrative and professional duties:

• Document patient visits and procedures accurately in medical records.
• Collaborate with other healthcare professionals for integrated patient care.
• Participate in continuing education and stay current with advancements in gastroenterology. 

Required skills and qualifications

Medical expertise: Deep knowledge of the gastrointestinal tract, liver, and related organs.

Technical skills: Proficiency in performing diagnostic and surgical procedures like endoscopy, colonoscopy, and biopsy.

Clinical judgment: Ability to make accurate diagnoses and treatment decisions, sometimes under pressure.

Organizational skills: Ability to manage a busy patient load and handle administrative tasks efficiently.
