Job Description

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Management

  • Take primary responsibility for all ICU patients: medical, surgical, trauma, or post-operative.
  • Perform advanced procedures: intubation, central line, arterial line, chest tube insertion, bedside tracheostomy, peritoneal/HD catheter placement, etc.
  • Manage ventilators, inotropes, fluid and electrolyte balance, sedation, and nutrition.
  • Interpret diagnostic results (ABG, ECG, radiology, labs) and revise treatment plans accordingly.
  • Respond promptly to emergencies such as cardiac arrest, sepsis, ARDS, stroke, and multi-organ failure.

ICU Protocols & Quality

  • Implement and monitor compliance with ICU protocols:
  • Sepsis bundles, sedation protocols, VAP prevention, early mobility, etc.
  • Maintain infection control and antibiotic stewardship standards.
  • Participate in ICU mortality and morbidity meetings and clinical audits.
  • Ensure timely and detailed documentation (daily notes, discharge summaries, death notes).

Multidisciplinary Coordination

  • Coordinate care with specialists (e.g., surgeons, neurologists, nephrologists) for comorbid management.
  • Liaise with nursing staff, physiotherapists, respiratory therapists, and dietitians for holistic ICU care.
  • Guide decisions regarding escalation or de-escalation of care (DNR/DNI, palliative care, etc.).

Teaching & Training (If academic hospital)

  • Train and supervise residents, medical officers, nurses, and paramedics in critical care skills.
  • Conduct bedside teaching, case discussions, and simulations.
  • Participate in continuing medical education (CME), conferences, and workshops.

Family Communication & Counseling

  • Communicate prognosis and treatment plans empathetically to patient families.
  • Handle sensitive discussions about outcomes, consent, and end-of-life care.

Qualifications

Essential:

  • MBBS + MD/DNB in Anaesthesia / General Medicine / Pulmonary Medicine / Emergency Medicine
  • DM / DNB Critical Care OR Fellowship in Critical Care Medicine (IDCCM, IFCCM, FNB, etc.)
  • Valid registration with State/National Medical Council

Desirable:

  • BLS, ACLS, ATLS certified (preferably instructor)
  • Experience managing Level 2/3 ICUs
  • Exposure to ECMO, CRRT, or advanced ventilation techniques

  • Teaching aptitude and interest in clinical research
