Job Description

A gynecologist job includes examining, diagnosing, and treating diseases of the female reproductive system, providing routine screenings like Pap tests, and offering preventive care and health education. An Obstetrician/Gynecologist (OB/GYN) also handles pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum care, which can include performing surgeries related to both pregnancy and reproductive disorders.  

Core duties and responsibilities

  • Examinations and screenings: Perform routine check-ups, pelvic exams, breast exams, and diagnostic tests like Pap smears, ultrasounds, and STDs tests. 
  • Diagnosis and treatment: Diagnose and treat a variety of conditions such as uterine fibroids, hormone imbalances, STIs, and various cancers affecting the female reproductive organs. 
  • Patient education: Advise patients on reproductive health, contraception, family planning, and disease prevention. 
  • Surgical procedures: Perform surgeries as needed, from minor procedures like biopsies to major surgeries such as hysterectomies or laparoscopies. 
  • Prenatal and postpartum care (for OB/GYNs): Provide comprehensive care to pregnant patients, including prenatal check-ups, monitoring, assisting in childbirth, and postpartum care. 
  • Medical management: Prescribe medications and other treatments for diagnosed conditions. 
  • Collaboration: Work with other healthcare professionals, such as nurses, midwives, and specialists, to provide comprehensive care. 
  • Record keeping: Maintain detailed and accurate patient medical histories and treatment plans. 
  • Continuing education: Stay up-to-date with the latest medical research and advancements in the field.
