Job Description

  • Analyze genetic information to identify patients or families at risk for specific disorders or syndromes.
  • Explain diagnostic procedures such as chorionic villus sampling (CVS), ultrasound, fetal blood sampling, and amniocentesis.
  • Provide genetic counseling in areas of clinical genetics including obstetrics, pediatrics, oncology, and neurology.
  • Assess patients' psychological and emotional needs related to stress, fear of test results, financial concerns, or family issues, and make appropriate referral recommendations.
  • Provide counseling to patients and family members through education, information sharing, and reassurance.
  • Determine or coordinate treatment plans by requesting laboratory services, reviewing genetics or counseling literature, and evaluating histories or diagnostic data.
  • Discuss testing options along with risks, benefits, and limitations to support informed decision-making.
  • Interpret laboratory results and clearly communicate findings to patients or physicians.
  • Interview patients or review medical records to gather comprehensive family or medical histories and document findings.
  • Educate patients on the inheritance patterns of conditions such as breast, ovarian, prostate, and colon cancer, cardiovascular diseases, Alzheimer's disease, and diabetes.
