Job Description

Key Responsibilities

1. Transplant Surgical Procedures

  • Perform or assist in:
  • Cadaveric and living donor organ retrieval surgeries
  • Liver, kidney, and/or pancreas transplant procedures
  • Vascular anastomoses, biliary reconstructions, ureteric implantation, etc.
  • Handle intraoperative and post-operative complications independently.
  • Participate in multi-organ procurement teams and adhere to national organ transplant protocols.

2. Pre- & Post-Operative Management

  • Evaluate and optimize transplant recipients pre-operatively.
  • Collaborate with hepatologists, nephrologists, and intensivists to manage post-op care.
  • Monitor for rejection, infections, thrombosis, leaks, and graft dysfunction.
  • Guide immunosuppressive therapy in collaboration with the medical transplant team.

3. Living Donor and Deceased Donor Surgery

  • Conduct donor evaluations and explain surgical risks and outcomes.
  • Perform laparoscopic or open donor nephrectomies and hepatectomies (for living liver donation).
  • Maintain strict adherence to donor safety and ethical guidelines.

4. Academic, Teaching & Research (If in Teaching Hospital)

  • Train surgical residents and fellows in transplant and general surgery procedures.
  • Conduct academic sessions, surgical skills labs, and mortality audits.
  • Publish research and present at national/international transplant conferences.
  • Contribute to clinical trials or data registries related to transplantation.

5. Program Development & Administration

  • Support development of transplant protocols, SOPs, and compliance with NOTTO/SOTTO regulations.
  • Work with transplant coordinators, legal teams, and ethics committees.
  • Promote patient awareness, outreach programs, and public education on organ donation.

Qualifications

Essential:

  • MBBS + MS / DNB in General Surgery
  • MCh / DNB in Surgical Gastroenterology / HPB Surgery / Urology (depending on organ focus)
  • OR Fellowship in Transplant Surgery (recognized national or international program)

Desirable:

  • Prior experience in a high-volume transplant center
  • Certification in Transplant Surgery (NOTTO recognized or equivalent)
  • Exposure to robotic or laparoscopic donor procedures

Skills & Competencies

  • High-level surgical expertise in vascular and abdominal organ surgery
  • Excellent decision-making under pressure
  • Team coordination with ICU, nephrology, hepatology, and anesthesia
  • Knowledge of transplant immunology, ethics, and legal framework
  • Strong communication with patients, donors, and families
  • Research aptitude and academic orientation (if applicable)
