Job Description

The Consultant Gastro surgeon will be responsible for diagnosing, treating, and managing surgical conditions related to the gastrointestinal (GI) system. This includes performing both elective and emergency surgeries on the digestive tract, liver, pancreas, and other related organs. The role also involves pre-operative and post-operative care, collaborating with gastroenterologists, and educating patients on managing GI health.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform complex gastrointestinal surgeries, including but not limited to:
  • Abdominal surgeries (e.g., appendectomy, colectomy, gastric bypass).
  • Hepatobiliary surgeries (e.g., cholecystectomy, liver resection).
  • Pancreatic surgeries (e.g., pancreaticoduodenectomy).
  • Endoscopic and minimally invasive procedures (e.g., laparoscopy, laparotomy).
  • Provide comprehensive care for patients pre- and post-surgery, including detailed assessments and follow-ups.
  • Collaborate with gastroenterologists, oncologists, and other specialists for the multidisciplinary management of complex GI conditions.
  • Interpret diagnostic test results (e.g., imaging studies, lab reports) to develop treatment plans.
  • Handle emergencies such as GI trauma, perforations, bowel obstructions, etc.
  • Guide and supervise junior doctors, residents, and nursing staff in surgical and medical aspects.
  • Participate in departmental academic activities, case discussions, and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Ensure all clinical documentation, including pre-op assessments, surgery reports, and post-op notes, is completed in a timely manner.
  • Stay updated with the latest advances in GI surgery techniques and best practices.
  • Educate patients on preventive measures for gastrointestinal health and recovery plans post-surgery.

Clinical & Surgical Skills:

  • Expertise in performing advanced gastro-intestinal surgeries, including laparoscopic and open procedures.
  • Ability to manage complex GI emergencies and critical care.
  • Proficiency in interpreting GI imaging (e.g., CT, MRI, ultrasound, endoscopy) and lab tests.
  • Familiarity with advanced surgical instruments and technologies (e.g., robotic surgery, minimally invasive techniques).

Soft Skills:

  • Strong communication skills to explain complex surgical procedures and post-operative care to patients and their families.
  • Empathy and patience in dealing with patients undergoing major surgeries.
